The Reign of Blood Moon
Galtan Brunortin (Reassigned)
Galtan Brunortin was the fourth child of Lilna Colurma and Thorog Brunortin. He was a legitimate child, so he didn’t suffer as many indignities from his community as he might have otherwise. Thorog was held in normal esteem by his peers, so Galtan was spared some suffering there. However, Galtan was not Thorog’s favorite and he got harsh and erratic treatment while training as a fighter. The odd twist of fortune is that this trained him to be an efficient member of Queen Blood Moon’s shock troops. This also made outsiders more palatable to him than his own family. While he was still young, Thorog and Galtan’s older brother Gromm were killed in one of Queen Blood Moon’s many conflicts. His older sister Mara died of the plague when Galtan was young. His older sister Gilga died of a broken skull falling from a tree while Galtan was still young. Galtan’s younger brother Aralk was killed under a runaway team of draft horses before he became an adult. Galtan’s youngest brother Wulgorr died of chicken pox before Galtan came of age. Lilna learned to deal with the loss of her many family members by distancing herself from everyone and everything. This did nothing for Galtan’s family socialization. Galtan learned from his mother how to disappear in plain sight. After all, if your own mother doesn’t notice you even though you were the only child that survived to adulthood, who would? His overall lesson from his family is that since they really didn’t want anything to do with him, he didn’t like them and didn’t want anything to do with them, either.
This distance made it easier for Galtan to separate from any group he belonged to. Indeed, the day came when he reported to his shock troop and they simply didn’t notice. They marched away, left him behind, and didn’t notice that, either. Before this mutual desertion, he gained fighting experience in Queen Blood Moon’s somewhat stalemated efforts to subjugate the dwarves. He spent his time storming caves, being a tunnel rat. He also learned a fighting respect for dwarves. Galtan also learned some cavalry tricks in his limited service. That gave him some hope that life could change. It also raised his world view a couple of hands (literally). All of this service to aggression by proxy had a somewhat unpredictable effect. Galtan has felt a need to protect the weak as a result of the harsh training by Thorog (and some semi-brutal beatings by Gromm). He has seen that Queen Blood Moon is fairly well bullying everybody. So he makes his way, trying to see if he can change things…
